A genuine piece of climbing history. This vintage Chouinard Figure 8 belay device dates back to the early days of Black Diamond Equipment, when Yvon Chouinard's vision for climbing safety was reshaping the sport. Figure 8s were the gold standard for rappelling and belaying before modern tubular devices became dominant, and this classic design remains beloved by traditional climbers and gear collectors alike.
The Figure 8 excels at dissipating heat during rappels, making it ideal for long descents where friction matters. Its symmetrical design provides versatility—use it for belaying with a redirect or go minimal for rappelling. The cast construction is robust and time-tested, having protected countless climbers through decades of real-world use.
As a vintage Chouinard piece, this device carries real significance for anyone invested in climbing equipment heritage. Condition is excellent, with no cracks, sharp edges, or material degradation. All features function flawlessly. A functional collectible that performs just as intended when the Chouinard name still graced climbing's finest tools.
